The objective of this work package is to organize the first EMANICS conference and related workshops at which the results of EMANICS research will be presented. Members will be able to inform themselves about all ongoing EMANICS activities. At the same time, this conference will be open to the general research community. The workshops will embody less formal meetings. Emphasis will be placed on having a location and structure in which participants can think and discuss issues, but also have time to work privately or in groups. To kick-start the workshops, 2-page progress reports will be requested from participants, and poster contributions will be requested. The workshops will not be conferences, and the results of the workshops will not be for direct publication. Workshop proceedings will be made available to participants by electronic dissemination (e.g. a Wiki).

A natural part of the dissemination activities would be to include short tutorials on key topics, especially for graduate students. Discussions and debates are also an important part of a meeting. The conference will also find a natural structure from bringing together the experts contributing to other prestige projects in related fields and parts of the world. This will maximize the points of contact with experts in the field and will help to bring together the different fragments into a common discussion.

Phase 1

Conferences and Workshops

Objectives

Workshop proceedings will be made available to participants by electronic dissemination (e.g. a Wiki).

The EMANICS conference will `document' or reflect, the breadth of work being carried out by the various work packages. Specialised work package meetings will also be held, in which members active in the specific work packages will plan and coordinate their research for the coming period. Published proceedings in an accredited journal or series will be produced. A programme, in which papers reviewed by at least three reviewers, solicited through an open call, will be presented. The purpose is to provide an outlet for timely dissemination of research results of EMANICS activities, as well as to attract papers on related research from outside the EMANICS community.

The first EMANICS conference will be organised by Oslo University College. Additional workshops on specialised topics may also be organised and hosted by other partners of the EMANICS NoE.

Tasks

T3.1: Workshops

  • The location of the workshops (including one co-located with the conference) will be decided.
  • Local organizing committees for the workshops must be decided and a structure for the meetings combining plenum and private sessions for the various work packages.

T3.2: MAGIX conference on the management of complex systems

  • The scope of the conference must be decided and suitable dates be selected
  • Support from leading organizations such as ACM and/or IEEE will be requested
  • Industrial and third party sponsorship will be requested
  • After this, local meeting facilities will be reserved by Oslo University College
  • A programme committee will be established, and a call for participation will be distributed
  • Topics and presenters for tutorials will be selected
  • Contributions will be reviewed by at least three reviewers
  • Assurance of network services for meeting
  • Organization of travel and living arrangements

T3.3: Magix external conference support

EMANICS has a dedicated budget set up to act as a supporting entity for some established world class conferences and workshops. Following subtasks will be performed to this end:

  • Selection of the conferences and workshops to be supported
  • Signing the sponsorship agreement and follow its application to ensure the visibility of the EMANICS network

Phase 2

Conferences, Outreach and Education

Objectives

The overarching objective of this work-package is to encourage and support the integration and dissemination of scientific research and education through workshops, conferences, special summer- or winter-schools, and educational resource development. The principal objective of WP3 is the organization of the second EMANICS conference event (whose name and profile are to be decided after experience with the completion of the first conference event (AIMS2007) at the end of the first period). Secondary objectives include establishing a programme of educational outreach activities, including workshops, summer schools and tutorials. In the second phase, EMANICS should reach out its dissemination activities to target the highly influential body of practitioners and technology organizations in the United States, where little research is carried out in this field, but where most product development and adoption takes place. This can be accomplished by attaching an EMANICS event or contribution to a leading US event such as the autumn USENIX Association Large Scale System Administration conference, which complements existing events like IEEE IM/NOMS by reaching a different audience. The visibility of EMANICS partners will be mapped in the work-package, as members advance the efforts of the network of excellence, by encouraging research and education through the publication of special issues and creation of new journal opportunities, popularization of research, and conference paper awards.More attention will be given to the production of lasting educational materials, including popularization, in the second phase. EMANICS can play a major role in defining the curricula and content of graduate and undergraduate programmes in Network Management.

Description of work

T3.1 : Organization of phase II EMANICS Events

Location, name and profile should be decided based on the experience of the first event.

  • Summer Schools (1st edition suggested in Bremen)
  • Research workshops

T3.2 : Scientific Dissemination Management

  • Foster involvement of EMANICS members in leading activities: Conference Chairmanship, Programme Committee involvement, Editorship of special issues in top journals, etc.
  • Map the EMANICS world wide scientific animation (TPC membership, council participation)
  • Production of educational resources including exercises and solutions for graduate and undergraduate university programmes (in complement to the WP1 course curriculum), as well as practicum training with examples based on EMANICS integration work. This activity also includes the support for tutorials

T3.3 : Major conference support

On a per application basis, support travel & registration of European students to major conferences in management Partners

Phase3

(Conferences, Outreach and Education)

Objectives

The overarching objective of this work-package is to encourage and support the integration and dissemination of scientific research and education through workshops, conferences, special summer- or winter-schools, and educational resource development.

The principal objective of WP3 is the organization of the third EMANICS conference event. Secondary objectives include establishing a programme of educational outreach activities, including workshops, summer schools and tutorials.

In this phase, EMANICS should also reach out its dissemination activities to target the highly influential body of practitioners and technology organizations in the United States, where little research is carried out in this field, but where most product development and adoption takes place. This can be accomplished by attaching an EMANICS event or contribution to a leading US event such as the autumn USENIX Association Large Scale System Administration conference, which complements existing events like IEEE IM/NOMS by reaching a different audience.

The visibility of EMANICS partners will be mapped in the work-package, as members advance the efforts of the network of excellence, by encouraging research and education through the publication of special issues and creation of new journal opportunities, popularization of research, and conference paper awards.

More attention will be given to the production of lasting educational materials, including popularization, in the second phase. EMANICS can play a major role in defining the curricula and content of graduate and undergraduate programmes in Network Management.
