Two Lines of Research

To align the project with international standardization activities, two lines of research are set out by the project:

  • one is in line with the MDA development (www.omg.org/mda) and aims at researching methods and techniques for platform independent design of services and relating different platform independent designs;

  • the other one is in line with the Semantic Web development (www.w3.org/2001/sw) and aims at developing a conceptual framework for developing design techniques.

Research Activities

The activities that we plan to carry out along these lines are shown in the figure below.

The figure shows from top to bottom how the research will progress for both lines.

The Platform Independent Design Line of research starts out with a State-of-the-Art study, based on which it will identify basic concepts for Service-oriented Design. These basic concepts will later on be specialized to form concepts for both enterprise design and enterprise application design. We consider these forms of design specific viewpoints in a platform independent design that may be related.

The Conceptual Framework Line of research starts out with the development of a language for meta-modeling. Then we develop an approach for the development of domain specific languages that we apply to create enterprise and application design languages.

The relation between the lines of research is such that the meta-modeling language from the conceptual framework line is used in the platform independent design line. Furthermore, the development of the viewpoint specific design models and languages is performed jointly along the two lines.
