Opening Reception

Monday, October 29, 6:00 PM
Harold Washington Library

Everyone is invited to attend the opening reception from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Beyond Words Café on the 9th floor of the library.  The entrance security guard can direct you to the café once you are inside the building. Food and drinks will be served.

Directions: The Harold Washington Library is located at 400 S. State Street.  This is just 1 block south of the DePaul Center on State Street.

Van Gogh and Gauguin: The Studio of the South

This exhibit examines the mutual admiration, rivalrous friendship, professional dialogue and collaboration of Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) and Paul Gauguin (1848-1903).  Over 150 works are featured, including 130 paintings, 16 drawings and 9 ceramic pieces.  A personal audio tour of the exhibit will also be available.  Only a limited number of tickets are available.  Free tickets can be picked up (1 ticket per registered MMNS conference participant) at the MMNS Registration Desk on Tuesday.

Directions: The Art Institute of Chicago is located at the intersection of Adams and Michigan - just 1 block north and 2 blocks east of the DePaul Center.  The gallery closes at 7:15 PM, so please arrive promptly.

IMAX Theatre, Navy Pier

This film captures the life story and gravity-defying feats of one of the greatest athletes of the 20th Century on the IMAX theatre’s giant 6-story 60 x 80-foot screen.  Only a limited number of tickets are available.  Conference participants may pre-register for free tickets (1 ticket per registered MMNS conference participant) at the MMNS Registration Desk on Tuesday.  Tickets will be handed out to MMNS participants at the IMAX theatre entrance at Navy Pier at 6:45 PM.  Film starts at 7:00 PM and runs for 45 minutes.  Navy Pier is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Chicago, with many shops, restaurants and amusements, including a giant Ferris wheel.

Directions: Navy Pier, at Grand Avenue on Lake Michigan, is 12 blocks north and 10 blocks east of the DePaul Center.  To walk to the Pier takes 45 – 60 minutes.  The simplest transportation to Navy Pier the CTA (Chicago Transit Authority) #29 State Street bus.  You can take this bus from any bus stop on State Street.  Bus fare is $1.50, which can be paid in cash (exact change required) or via CTA Transit Card.  A cab to Navy Pier would cost around $10. 

TPC Dinner

University Club of Chicago

A dinner for members of the MMNS 2001 Technical Program Committee will be held on Tuesday evening.  Cocktails are available starting at 7:30 PM and dinner is served at 8:00 PM.  The Club has a “business casual” dress code which does not allow athletic shoes or denim jean clothing. 

Directions: The University Club of Chicago is located at 76 E. Monroe (the corner of Monroe and Michigan) - 2 blocks north and 2 blocks east of the DePaul Center.

Conference Banquet

Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant

Everyone is welcome to the MMNS 2001 Conference Banquet.

Directions: Maggiano’s Little Italy Restaurant is located at 516 N. Clark street (the corner of Clark and Grand) - 12 blocks north and 2 blocks west of the DePaul Center.  To walk to the restaurant takes around 30 minutes.  The simplest transportation to the restaurant is the CTA Red Line subway train.  Go down the subway stairs on State Street ½ block north of the DePaul Center. Train fare is $1.50, which must be paid via CTA Transit Card.  Transit Card vending machines are located in the subway station.  Ride the northbound Red Line subway train (marked “to Howard”) 4 stops and get off at the Grand Avenue station.  Go up to street level and walk 2 blocks west to Clark street.  A cab to the restaurant would cost around $8.
